How do Intake Systems Increase Gas Mileage How Do Intake Systems Increase Gas Mileage? The balanced mixture of fuel and air for combustion is what your engine needs to run. OEM (or stock) intake tubes and air boxes are made to keep as quiet as possible. They usually contain a disposable air filter that needs to be replaced roughly every 15,000 miles depending on where you drive. They also constrain the air box, and that means less air and warmer air - causing a fuel-rich combustion mixture. Cold Air Intake Systems have a wider pipe and less bends which allow for more air flow. They also relocate the air box so that it can get cooler air than the OEM intakes. Cooler air and more air, that is denser and contains more oxygen, leads to much easier combustion. The following formula will display what Intake systems like AEM and K&N will provide. Denser Air/More Oxygen + Better Mixture of Fuel and Air = Maximum Power and Effiiency (more horse power and better gas mileage). On average, if the stock system is replaced by a good name brand aftermarket Intake System - they get about 1-2 mpg improvement! Intake systems are the cheapest way to increase horsepower and gas mileage with one part! Between the better gas mileage and lifetime filter - an Intake System is a no-brainer that will save money! This increased gas mileage can easily be lost if you choose to gun it at every stop light (and you will want to). |
